I just going to try and forget about today and start over tomorrow. Waking up to 28 dead baby chickens isn't a really great way to start out a new day. That was followed up with shots for Cora. Thankfully, our friend Justin came out to clean up the mess in the coop for me. I took him and his wife out to dinner tonight to show my appreciation and what he described in the coop was just awful. Poor Trey, his heart is broken. He put the two old hens away tonight and was in tears when he opened the coop door and his babies were gone. He wants to know if chickens go to Heaven.
It's been so interesting to learn the difference between caring for chickens and growing food in the city and in the country. Oddly, it's easier in the city. Much easier. I'm officially done growing anymore food until we have a secure fenced in garden. There are so many animals out at night and they had a midnight snack on my peas a few nights ago. So, the goal for this summer will be a nice, sturdy fence so that next spring our efforts won't be in vain. As for chickens, they were so much easier in the city. The most wildlife we had in Franklinton was our neighbors pet squirrel...I'm serious. Something very strong and determined broke through the screen door and the chicken wire to eat the babies last night. Definitely not a semi-tame squirrel.
So, we're learning a lot the hard way. Just think what the gardens and animals will look like though when my grandchildren come over to visit many years from now!
But, I'll sleep well tonight. There's a sweet little four year old (almost five!) with a head full of curls snuggled up asleep in my bed. As soon as I get my kitchen clean I'm going to go snuggle up with him.
Oh Kerri, I'm so sorry! Poor dead chicks. I hope you have a better day tomorrow. ((((hugs))) P.S. I'm so glad you made your blog public. That means it could be added to my blog reader and won't miss reading your posts for months at a time!
