I know, I can't quit blogging...life has just been really interesting lately! I've been asked a time or two, "So, why do you go to the Episcopal church now." I've given various responses...
it's across the street from our house
we have so much respect for our priest
we love the way St. John's serves this neighborhood
we share so many values with the Episcopal church when it comes to peace and social justice
All of these are still true. But, tonight was the church picnic/VBS registration and it was great. So, here's my new answer to the question. Where else can you find a church where karaoke at the church picnic includes the priest singing loudly "Son of a Preacher Man," and a long time mission council member singing "Redneck Woman" with several talented back up singers screaming "Let me get a big 'Hell Yeah' from the redneck girls like me" in the background? I was laughing so hard it hurt. I sat for a few minutes in the grass just trying to take it all in. It's all so different than anything I've ever known church to be, so raw, so good. There were a few games, some crafts for the kids, free dinner and snowcones, and VBS registration. Nothing cost the church much money, but our neighborhood was there enjoying the afternoon. I saw some neighbors we already know, met some new ones, and was really happy to be enjoying it all with the people I worshiped with this morning. Here's the really crazy part, my boys think our life here in "The Bottoms" is completely normal!
Normal - I think you and your mom are realizing our "normal" is a bit scary!! Sounds like great fun
