Just finished my first batch of tortilla chips.  Crazy to start with flour, cornmeal, and a few other ingredients and in a few minutes have a bowl full of homemade chips.  Here are my reasons for making something that you can buy with pretty pure ingredients from the store.

1.  I think I saved a few bucks...not that tortilla chips are super expensive.

2.  Eating chips becomes a time consuming choice, not a mindless activity.  If I'm hungry, a quick fix is a handful of chips from the bag.  The quick fix should be an apple.  Chips become a treat if I am making a deliberate choice to make them for my family, rather than a snack staple in our house.

3.  No preservatives.  I watched the ingredients go into the bowl and every ingredient was a good choice for my family.  I can pronounce all the ingredients, so I now have moved chips from the food product category to the real food category.

It was fun.  Healthy eating has been a priority for us for a long time now, but it's time to cut out some of the easy convenience  foods we've allowed to slip into our diet.
