We started buying our kids books of poetry about three years ago. Now at least one of them picks a poetry book almost every night at bedtime, the obvious favorite being Shel Silverstein. Their daddy is the master of the silly poems, he can pull off some amazing voices.

This year Riley's class has been focusing on poetry during their reading and writing lessons and Riley will be one of six kids in the class publishing his own book of poems this year. He has developed a love of poetry at a very young age and it's so much fun to watch him begin to write his own.

Today I will be celebrating Mother's Day with my grandma and I asked the boys to make something for me to take to her. Trey pulled out all the art supplies and immediately got to work. I think Riley is a little intimidated by Trey's natural art ability. Riley is more like me and things like that just don't come easy for him. But, now he has his own form of art that he enjoys with poetry so I encouraged him to write a poem for my grandma instead of making her a card. About twenty minutes later he handed me this...

From:Riley
To: Nean (their name for my Grandma)

Love

Love is powerful and
mighty
Love sinks down
in
your heart. Love
is
the power of everything.
Love
is the best thing
possible.
And I love my grandma.

Beautiful.
